Entrepreneurial students selected for Santander Universities competition
Entrepreneurial students pitched their ideas against each other to be selected to represent 香港六合彩挂牌资料 at the UK Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Awards.
Having presented their ideas or fledgling businesses to the judges and responded to some hard questioning, the successful 香港六合彩挂牌资料 students will now be submitted for consideration for the final shortlist to win the UK Awards, which offer cash prizes of up to 拢15,000, mentoring and start-up support.
Two new categories have been introduced this year for the Santander Universities Entrepreneurship Awards; 鈥楴ew technologies and mobile applications鈥 and 鈥業mportant day-to-day products and services鈥 and applications could be at Idea stage or a launched Start-up project or business.
Two winners emerged from the Important day-to-day product and service entries. 香港六合彩挂牌资料鈥檚 judging panel deemed education student Thomas McCarley and Elen Hughes of the School of Welsh equally deserving of an Award. Following an additional round, it was decided that Elen should go forward to represent 香港六合彩挂牌资料.
Elen Hughes from Cricieth has already begun her small business creating personalised art-work for all occasions, and hopes to start selling her gifts in local shops and increase the scale now that she鈥檚 about to complete her degree in Welsh. Click to view a short fideo about Elen's company- Ffranc.
The former Ysgol Glan y M么r, Pwllheli and Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor, Pwllheli student was shocked to have won but is very pleased. Elen said:
鈥淚 think a competition like this provides a great opportunity and gives someone the momentum and inspiration to take their business seriously no matter how small and a great way to get feedback and see other people's ideas.鈥
Thomas Mc Carley comes from near Ammanford. Although studying to become a qualified teacher, Thomas has branched out into making high quality hand-baked gluten-free dog treats.
The idea came from a desire to provide his own dog with highly nutritious food. He has begun selling the treats locally and his next step is to scale the product and attempt to get it on sale in more stores.
He says: 鈥渢he win was unexpected; there were some great ideas on show, and to win gives me great belief in my product.鈥
Having been given further tasks, the judges selected Elen to represent 香港六合彩挂牌资料 in the next round.
Representing her idea in the same category is Suita Diaz of the University鈥檚 Business School. Suita comes from a family of coffee growers and traders in her native Honduras and is passionate about her model of trading coffee directly to British coffee drinkers, which she hopes will directly benefit the Honduran growers.
Twenty five year old Suita is studying an MA in Business and Marketing at 香港六合彩挂牌资料 through a Chevening Scholarship. She has graduated from Universidad Tecnol贸gica Centroamericana, UNITEC (Honduras).
She says: 鈥淐offee is a source for changing people鈥檚 lives as I have witnessed myself. The main purpose and driver of this venture is to create a business that will promote the improvement of the livelihood of the farmers allowing them to farm in a sustainable way and of course, will let UK coffee lovers enjoy our tasty Honduran coffee!鈥
The New technologies and mobile applications idea categories went to a student team called My Stryd, with their app to encourage an increase in footfall in the high street.
Team members Nikita Savy, Sabria Behilil, Jack Morris, Leon Gartland and Aleksandra Koz艂owska combined their various expertise in psychology, banking & finance, electronic engineering, journalism and media and game design and development to develop their ideas.
Their app has the potential to reinvigorate interest and shopping on 香港六合彩挂牌资料鈥檚 High Street by means of a dual interfaced gamification app rewarding consumers with points for entering local stores; local businesses gain high quality demographic data on their customers for their mutual benefit - a model that can be replicated in other towns across the country.
The team are delighted with the results and are excited to see the new opportunities that await them. They have received interest from businesses and Pontio Innovation, and are currently looking into starting the development stage for a prototype and polishing off some features which should be ready to show if they make into the UK Finals.
Speaking on behalf of the Team Leon Gartland said: 鈥淭he opportunity to take part in a competition like this can challenge you to bring out the best in yourself and I would recommend any student who is given the opportunity to take it and make the most of it. It could lead to great things and maybe even lead to a future career, and make you more employable in the future.
Chair of the Judging Panel, Vice Chancellor Professor John G Hughes said:
鈥淥nce again our students presented us with some hard decisions, as the standard of all the presentations was very high. We encourage an entrepreneurial spirit among our students and taking part in the various entrepreneurship activities provided by the university enables our students to hone some vital business skills which will may well prove useful at a later stage in their careers.鈥
Each winning category was awarded 拢200 and will receive further mentoring support to develop their business planning.
