George Krokos Financial Economics
A Financial Economics graduate from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ Business School, George now works in the city as a corporate broker.Â
How has your career developed since graduating from Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ, and what is your current job role?
Since I've left Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ, I have enjoyed a career in the city starting my professional life out as an investor relations executive in a boutique firm. I then transitioned to Numis where I worked on the private client broking desk as an equity salesperson. I then transitioned into corporate broking when I joined WH Ireland, where I specialise in Small – Mid Cap UK listed companies, raising capital and broking the investment cases to institutions.
Why did you choose to study at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ Business School?
I choose Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ due to the ranking of the Financial Economics course, the syllabus, and the location of the University. I grew up in the centre of Athens and thus wanted to move to a more remote and smaller town. Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ's located in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK, that coupled with the university’s student satisfaction statistics made me take the plunge and I must say I never regretted it!
How has your degree and experiences at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ Business School influenced your career/life?
The degree gave me strong fundamentals on financial markets, finance, and accounting. However, I must say it was also broad, in the sense that we even had law and marketing modules which has allowed me to have a more spherical approach in my career but also life.
What advice would you give to students studying in the Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ Business School?
My biggest piece of advice would be to be active! Don’t stick to the curriculum, reach out to alumni or industry professionals, and try to deconstruct and understand the industry. If for example investment banking is the career you would like to follow, try and understand each moving part of a bank as best as you can so you start to get an idea of what skills you would need to do each role and what fits you! The latter being the most important thing.
What was the best thing about studying at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ Business School?
The curriculum and lecturers were brilliant! I found it a very well put together course and didn’t find it hard to follow. Furthermore, the university buildings and library are excellent and add to the experience!
In what ways did studying in the Business School enhance your employability?
I believe it enhanced my employability by providing me with life skills that I will always carry with me. Through bringing in alumni to speak to us and run workshops, different teaching methods, trips abroad and purely by moving to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ. I met a lot of people during my time there and really came out of my shell. I believe it is a great choice for any young person looking to develop themselves into a young adult!
