The 2023 CSEE (Computer Science and Electronic Engineering) EXPO

The Computer Science and Electronic Engineering EXPO was held on Wednesday 15th March 2023. 鈥淭his is a showcase,鈥 said Professor Jonathan C. Roberts (Director of Impact and Engagement for the School). 鈥淭he EXPO provides all the final-year students an opportunity to present their final-year project, and companies to present what they do.鈥 This year the EXPO took place in the Pritchard-Jones hall which is the main hall of the University. Students showed their project work on posters that were displayed in the centre of the hall, while local companies exhibited around the side. Alongside the main poster event, a programme of lightening talks was also held. Local companies explained what they did, and a few school staff presented their research.聽

Dr Dave Perkins (Director for Teaching and Learning) welcomed everyone and introduced the day.

鈥淚t was brilliant to welcome so many people. We had third year students, other undergraduates, lots of our taught postgraduate students, and tens of companies.鈥

Dave went on to say

鈥淚 take this opportunity to thank my colleagues: Dr Yanhua Hong who manages the third-year project module, and Carwyn Edwards, who is the Digital Innovation Manager in , for organising the industrial lightening talks. Finally, I would like to acknowledge the students who worked hard on their project work, and the many student volunteers who helped to setup and dismantle the poster boards.鈥澛

Professor Roberts (chair of the awards and recognitions committee) spoke with the award winners:

I have been enjoying the project work. I have been designing and developing an Electroporation System to Treat Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). EB is a skin disease that causes the skin to blister. Electroporation is a technique to apply an electrical field to increase the permeability of the cell membrane to help drugs be more easily absorbed. I have designed and built a prototype electrode design. The EXPO was brilliant. It enabled me to show my work. It is an honour to receive this award, and I thank the review committee for selecting me for this award.

Ms Zainab Almahrous,  BSc Electronic Engineering

Many students are stressed. But can we model student pressure? This is the starting point of my project. I have been looking specifically at assessments and have been using a pressure formula to model student pressure and visualise the results. The tool can show how pressure varies for students who are keen (start ahead of time), those who work consistently, and for others that start late (close to the deadline) for their assessment work. I enjoyed the EXPO. It was brilliant to see all the other students work. I also enjoyed the company talks.

Miss Sophie Jolley,  BSc Computer Science

It has been a delight to work on my project, and it is a real honour to receive this award. I thank the awards committee for honouring me with this award. For my individual project, I have been developing a book, with integrated augmented reality. Imagine reading a book and seeing the characters come to life, in 3D, on the page. The characters could talk with you, interact with you, and so forth. This is my project. I have authored a short story on the folk legends of North Wales and am working on some of the characters. Obviously, there are dragons. It is a brilliant way to use all my skills of computer programming, design, storytelling and so on.

Mrs Rhiannon Owen,  BSc Creative Technologies

Dr Yanhua Hong (Senior Lecturer in Optoelectronics, and organiser of the project module) added

It was a brilliant day. I enjoyed speaking with the students, hearing about their project work, and listening to the company talks. Many companies were interested in recruiting students. We know several students who have been invited for recruitment events, after meeting with the companies. We wish them well in their next steps.
