Every Teacher is a Language Teacher
Introducing the Welsh language across the curriculum was the focus of a timely discussion organised by Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ at the stand at the Urdd Eisteddfod on Friday 8 June.
In the session ‘Every teacher is a language teacher’, experts from the University’s and previous participants of the National Sabbatical Scheme discussed how the course can help teachers of every subject introduce Welsh more effectively to pupils.
The session was aimed at head teachers, but was open to all. The panellists were Dr. Llion Jones, Director, Canolfan Bedwyr; Eleri Hughes, Head Tutor; Adam Rhys Williams, Assistant Head Teacher, Ysgol Uwchradd Caergybi and Carole Richardson, a teacher at Newborough Primary School. Wyn Thomas, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ, chaired the session.
The Sabbatical Scheme (Higher Course) is a three month language course which is fully funded by the Welsh Government. It is aimed at fluent Welsh speakers and is held in Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ, Cardiff and Carmarthen. Canolfan Bedwyr, Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÒÅÆ×ÊÁÏ’s centre for Welsh language services, leads the Scheme nationally in cooperation with Cardiff University and the University of Trinity Saint David’s. It is open to teachers, classroom assistants, lecturers and trainers who want to improve their Welsh. This year, for the first time, course participants can gain a national qualification on completion of the course.
